NETWORK DESIGN > Secured Networks

Security should be considered from the outset. This is where secure network design should be completely understood. Secure Networks are generally built upon a series of layers, each layer giving features or elements of security. When designing a network, whether it connects to the public Internet or not, it should be built in such a way that security can be added or incorporated. The technologies employed should at least be capable of supporting filtering, logging and reporting. Internal systems should be patched to the latest practical revision levels and virus checkers must be employed. As the network is built, these features should be turned on. Where a network is connected to the public Internet, then firewall technology and perimeter security must be employed.

Internally logging should be turned on and if possible authentication technologies and intrusion detection deployed. At
