SOLUTIONS > Small Business Solution Examples

The examples given below, outlines some of the solutions that we offer for small businesses. As we only use scaleable architectures and defined models, your business can re-use the technology that we deploy as you expand. The solutions are built using a hierarchy. As your company grows, the hierarchy expands from one to three layers.

An example initial solutions could see the employment of a single office router connected to a work group hub. Depending on the product chosen, the hub could support up to forty eight users.

As your organisation grows however, the use of hubs means that each user is sharing the same wire. In essence as the number of users increase, the hubs performance and throughput decreases.

To counter this, switches can be employed in their place. Switches give each user their own piece of wire and so there is less contention on the LAN. They can scale to a high density of ports and so again can be re-used or ports can be increased upon if the switch is modular.

The choice of router is also paramount. Routers are available in a variety of different sizes and have a varied degree of throughput and memory.

Initially it is likely that your business will use the Internet via an ISDN basic rate connection or DSL. As utilisation increases and your business grows so will the requirement for additional Internet bandwidth.

At this time, it may be worthwhile considering a dedicated leased line instead of the ISDN connection. For low volume usage, ISDN is the most cost effective solution. If you are using the Internet for more than four hours per day, then it becomes more cost effective to purchase a leased line.

All of the routers we supply have an additional security feature where firewall software can be used instead of standard routing software. The functionality of the router is the same as before, but with the addition of the software is capable of acting as a software based firewall and intrusion detection system.

When properly configured, the router will block all unnecessary and unwanted traffic from the outside world. This gives a good degree of protection to a business without the overhead of investing in a dedicated firewall device unless higher levels of security and performance are required. The firewall router is a combined device, as such the performance throughput of the router is not that of a dedicated firewall. Although generally not an issue, some customers prefer the router only to route and then purchase a hardware based firewall for increased security.
