NETWORK DESIGN > Remote Access Design

With many of today's business drivers changing, having a mobile and flexible workforce gives competitive advantage. With mobility however, the task of co-ordinating and sharing information becomes difficult.

Having a flexible workforce can force inconveniences on the business as availability of staff has to be twenty-four hours per day seven days per week.

The only practical solution to these problems is to allow your workers remote access to your business systems. Until recently the method of allowing access to internal systems was via a dial up link.

This sort of connection, although workable can present security as well as technical problems. Some of this lies in the area of maintaining banks of modems for dial up use.

Other problems lie in the fact that many attacks are carried out by war dialling. This is the process of going through all known company telephone numbers and then observing received tones upon dialling. If a modem answers, then this is an area that could be attacked.

The best solution to the above is to use VPN's to allow your workforce to connect to your network in a secure and reliable way.

If your remote users have an Internet connection, something that can be obtained for the cost of a local call, then they can connect into your network.

VPN's work by using software to encrypt traffic as it passes across the Internet. This can be achieved by agreeing passwords (Pre-Share Keys) within the software or by using certificate servers to issue digital certificates to verify correct identities (Public Key Infrastructure).

The levels of encryption available in today's market place are such that they are thought to be impenetrable without millions of pounds worth of computing power to crack the codes they use.

Because VPN's work across Internet boundaries, further security can be applied to them. For example not only can you assign passwords to your users, you can authenticate each user as they connect to your network and you can authorise the services they use. This means that your organisation has total control over your business and the information flows within it.

At Excis Networks we offer several remote access solutions, ranging from dial up connections to the very latest secure VPN technology. We can install authorisation and accounting systems as well as PKI and digital certificates. Whatever your remote access needs, to be cost effective, secure and mobile, talk to Excis Networks.
