When a Project Management Consultancy examined the focus of its business, it derived a sales strategy that would move it from a local company to a company working more on a national basis. The company in question was based in the South East of England and its contracts were predominantly in this area. To be more competitive, it wanted to win business in other areas of the UK.

Having determined its business strategy, the company examined the costs of undertaking their new sales strategy. They decided that opening another office was not feasible. The way they wanted to work was to use their existing offices as an administrative base, with project workers using remote access technology to connect and share business information. Email was not enough for these tasks, as they wanted their users to log onto their domain and share information as regular users.

The Project Management Consultancy turned to Excis Networks for help and advice. Because of the sensitive nature of their information and the fact that they wanted to reduce dial up costs, but enable access from anywhere in the UK, we suggested VPN technologies.

By adding a VPN client to each of their mobile computers and by upgrading the companies firewall, we were able to deploy a cost effective VPN solution.

The Project Management Consultancy decided that they wanted to use PKI and digital certificates, as they wanted to allow suppliers and customers to use the VPN as well. To this end, we suggested that they outsource their certificate servers and employ local authentication and accounting via Cisco's TACACS product. As a result not only does a user need the right VPN client and verified digital certificates, they also need to provide passwords to log on to the network and when they do so, all traffic is monitored and access rights are granted against predefined profiles. This means that only authorised information is shared with known and trusted users.

Because they decided to outsource their certificate servers, maintenance and administration was easier and their costs were reduced as a result. Their networks are secure and they have a fully mobile and flexible workforce that is able to be part of the company . This has allowed greater collaboration and productivity as processes are shared across the whole business.
